Accommodations: Cheap places to stay in San Francisco

To us, a hotel is a place to sleep. Nothing more. I look for the cheapest place and keep my expectations low. I really don’t care if the place is a dump or smells funny or if the guy at the front desk is a stupid jerk. Ending up in a trashy hotel can be rather amusing at times and bring back some funny stories to tell when you get home. Other times we surprise ourselves and end up somewhere actually nice. I prefer hotels that include free breakfast since that is one less meal we have to worry in our budget. If there’s a microwave or kitchen of some sort, even better so we can provide our own meals or reheat food. But otherwise, as long as we don’t end up in a gang warzone or a place infested with pests, I’m content. Because a cheap hotel can be a hit or miss, I like being given a head’s up for what I’m getting into ahead of time, and that’s when I consult yelp.com or tripadvisor.com. San Francisco has a pretty serious bed bug epidemic, so if you’re booking a place to stay in San Francisco, I highly recommend checking bedbugregistry.com beforehand to make sure bed bugs won’t ruin your trip.

If you need a free place to stay, and especially if you’re traveling alone, try couchsurfing.com. This website has listings for people all over the country and the world who are offering their couch for travelers to sleep on.

A few websites to try for vacation rentals:

AirBnB.com – lists spaces being rented out by private owners. This includes vacation rentals, private rooms, entire apartments, bed & breakfasts, boutique hotels, and unconventional accommodations. Good deals are to be found on this site.
VRBO.com – another site that with listings from private owners renting out their space for travelers.
Craigslist – click on “vacation rentals”. Be aware that Craigslist is not always terribly reliable and is sadly infested with flakes who bail at the last minute, and scammers. Scammers are usually fairly obvious (if the post is barely in english, that’s usually a give-away), but there’s no avoiding the flakes! Many good deals are to be found on Craigslist, but just be cautious and have a back-up plan just in case.

If you are traveling to San Francisco and are looking for something more traditional, there are PLENTY of budget hotels and hostels all over the city. Many budget hotels are European style, which is sort of like a cross between a hotel and a hostel–you get a private room, but you have to share a bathroom. Many hostels also offer “European style” private rooms.

One tip I have that will save you a small bit of cash is to tell the front desk you wish to opt out of maid service. That way, you only have to worry about tipping the maid for the last night you’re there, or once or twice a week depending on the hotel’s policy. You can of course always change your mind at any time about maid service if your room becomes disastrous and in need of a cleaning!

The following is a list of hotels and hostels in San Francisco that are under $90. Since I am not a traveler in San Francisco, unfortunately I can’t advise on which ones are good and which are not (again, try consulting yelp or tripadvisor). Rates vary depending on what kind of room you want and when you need a room. Rates may have also changed since this blog post was created. Many hotels offer discounts if for extended stay (typically 2-3+ days). If you are planning a longer stay, hotels that offer weekly rates are often the best deals.
